Credit Union’s Emergency Grants Strengthened Food Inventories During The Holiday Season
Charter Oak Federal Credit Union donated $100,000 in emergency food assistance to eastern Connecticut’s food pantries and food centers to help boost food supplies to those in need during the holiday season.
For the second year in a row 20 food pantries received $5,000 this past December for much-needed food supplies at food centers and food pantries serving New London and Windham counties.

The annual Community Carol Sing at Mystic Seaport Museum will be held Sunday, December 20, from 3 to 4 p.m. This will be the 73rd year the Museum has held the event.
To accommodate a safe and socially distant event due to COVID-19, the singalong will be held as a drive-in at the Museum’s south parking lot. The songs will be broadcast so carolers can tune in on their car radio and join in the singing. Charter Oak Federal Credit Union’s 2020 Matching Gifts Program donated a combined $400,000 from the credit union and its members to over 280 charitable organizations this holiday season, from local food pantries to shelters for the homeless.

As the novel coronavirus spread across Connecticut from west to east, myriad nonprofits were being called upon to assist residents as illness struck, job losses mounted, and safety nets were strained.
Nonprofits both large and small have seen an increase in requests for help and an uptick in users, whether it’s food pantries, homeless shelters, or nature preserves. While managing the healthcare aspects of the virus, Hartford HealthCare is witnessing the important impact of these NPOs.
“These small Charter Oak Federal Credit Union’s Community Outreach Committee has donated more than $3,100 for food assistance to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center as well as health-care workers and “meals on wheels” recipients in eastern Connecticut.
The Community Outreach Committee is an employee-led assistance program that receives its funding from Charter Oak employees who pay $3 weekly to dress down on Friday “Casual Days.” These funds are used to assist Charter Oak members in need.

Charter Oak Federal Credit Union is providing an additional $37,500 in emergency grants to 15 food pantries and meal programs in eastern Connecticut, bringing the credit union’s total food-assistance donations in April to $75,000, the largest one-month donation in the credit union’s 81-year history.
“The need is still great to provide food assistance to the many individuals and families who’ve been directly impacted by the Coronavirus,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s President and Chief Executive The Dime Bank Foundation announced on April 8 that it will immediately provide a number of grants to local organizations who are facing surges in food and meal-related needs as a result of the coronavirus (COVID19).

Charter Oak Federal Credit Union is providing $35,000 in emergency grants to 14 food pantries and meal programs in New London and Windham counties to help them meet growing food insecurity issues caused by the continuing COVID-19 health crisis.
“We realize this health crisis is creating mounting pressures on food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters, so this emergency funding will help restock their shelves to provide food assistance to those in need,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s President and TVCCA’s RSVP Veterans’ Coffeehouse is partnering with the Montville Senior Center to add a new gathering place for local veterans. The first meeting will be held Wednesday, March 11 from 9am to 11am. The Coffeehouse is scheduled to meet on the second Wednesday of each month. The Veterans’ Coffeehouse is a comfortable location for ALL veterans and their spouses to socialize and receive information regarding veterans’ benefits and services.

Priority was given to programs that bring science and math to students from elementary through high school. Additional awards were made for programs that provide for the underserved or to support local civic and cultural institutions. Groups receiving support in 2019 Mystic, CT – Mystic Seaport Museum is pleased to announce its annual Community Carol Sing raised $550 and collected 610 pounds of food to be donated to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center.
The Carol Sing is a tradition at the Museum for more than 70 years; admission is waived for the day in lieu of a donation of a non-perishable food item. The event was held Sunday, December 16, and included a holiday concert by the Mystic Seaport Carolers and the Community Carol Sing in the center of the McGraw Gallery Norwich, CT – The Dime Bank Foundation has announced that their 2018 philanthropic contributions back to the community has now surpassed $200,000 with their most recent gifting of over $75,000 to twenty-five local charities as part of the Bank’s annual “Season of Giving.” Every year at the holidays, donations are made throughout the community by Dime in an effort to help assure that those in need are cared for in life’s most basic needs – food, warm clothing and shelter.

Thank you to our Groton, CT – The Chelsea Groton Foundation awarded $189,585 in grants to 67 non-profit organizations from Connecticut and Rhode Island this spring. This dollar amount marks the greatest total awarded to area organizations in a single giving cycle since the Chelsea Groton Foundation was founded. Inclusive of these donations, the Foundation has provided over $2.8 million in total grants to the community since 1999. The Foundation reviews applications and awards grants two times per year.

This funding supports 47 programs at 21 nonprofit organizations in New London County that work together to provide an essential safety net services to help those in need.
Leading the program review and fund distribution are trained and knowledgeable volunteers who live or work in New London County. Volunteer teams evaluate program performance and analyze program results. United Way of Southeastern Connecticut’s Board of Directors has approved fund distributions in the amount of $2,519,460 for the fiscal year 2016-16. This funding supports 47 programs at 21 nonprofit organizations in New London County that work together to provide a network of safety net of services to help those in need.

Eastern CT – The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation has announced the distribution of $103,987 to 35 eastern CT nonprofits that will improve the quality of life for thousands of children in the region.
The Foundation raised funds throughout 2015 with fundraisers including the 4th Annual Bowl-a-Thon at High Rollers Luxury Lanes at Foxwoods Resort Casino in April and the 32nd Annual Holiday Gala held Credit Union Funds 11 Grants and Donates to 10 Local Food Pantries in DecemberWaterford, CT – Charter Oak Federal Credit Union donated more than $75,000 to community organizations in its fourth-quarter.
Donating food and money to local food pantries has become a key funding initiative for Charter Oak. This past December, the credit union donated $34,000 to local food pantries in an effort to help them restock their pantry shelves after the busy holiday season. Organized by Pine Point’s G.I.V.E. Committee (Generosity, Involvement, Volunteerism and Education), the efforts benefitted the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, Jonnycake Center in Westerly, and the Center for Hospice Care of Southeast Connecticut.
The G.I.V.E. Committee is an elected group of middle school students who organize all the school’s philanthropic efforts.
